WíIAT WAS KNOWN ABOUT THE MARRIAGE OE JÁNOS BOLYAI AND THE DOCUMENTS János Bolyai has been believed by his biographers up till now to liave gone home in June 1833 as a retired captain to his father in Marosvásárhely. Ncxt, year he moved to Domáld. TIere he was living with Rozália Orbán for long years without offieially marrying her. They eould not )btain the neeessary permission, failing to prove I he attainment of the preseribed finaneial eondition. Although severa! ehildren had been born to them, their relations were onee for all broken off by order of the military authoritios in 1852. Now the author is publishing unknown doeuments about tlie marriage of János Bolyai and Rozália Orbán, contraeted on May 18th, 1849. Then he speaks of János Boly a i'.s conneetions, likewise not mentioned by his biographers up till now, with the physieian József E ngel and organ-builder János S z a b ó, who were witnesses at their wedding. Finally somé fragm ntary letters of Rozália O r b á n are puhlished, sliedding new light on her relation with Bolyai. 14
