Sáfrán Györgyi: Arany János és Rozvány Erzsébet (A MTAK kiadványai 19. Budapest, 1960)

personally knew John Arany. In his young years, the poet was the private tutor of the eight years old Elisabeth Rozvany, aunt of the mentioned Mrs. Popovits. Arany also lived in the Rozvanys' house during a certain period. The documents now preserved in the Library of the Academy throw light upon the reminiscences kept alive by the Rozvanys, according to which the fate of Elisabeth, Arany's little pupil, made a great impression on his cpics. This fact is demonstrated by the poem „Catherine" [Katalin], and in the heroine's portrait of Arany's greatest epic „The Love of Toldi". The friendly contacts between John Arany and the Rozvanys had always been kept up. This fact can be stated from the writings of Gabriella Rozvany, and from the letters written by Arany's children to Elisabeth Rozvany. These are preserved and our Library happened to obtain a part of the correspondence, while the other part of the collection is kept by the Muzeul Regional in Oradea. The copies of the letters are, however, kept in photos in our Library. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences is the centre of researches on John Arany's life and poetry. A critical edition of his poetical works is being published by the Academy. The greatest collection of Arany's manuscripts, letters are here in the Library of the Academy. In the Appendix of this study we published the first attempt by Arany to translate artistically. Then here are the notes of George Rozvany which kept alive the memories of the young John Arany. These memories appeared anonymously. The unique copy of this precious literary relic is preserved by our Library; it is anonymous as mentioned, but its authorship is still proved by a short hand-written note found on it. This valuable literary relic could get to the Library of the Academy with the bequest of Ladislas Arany, who left his father's manuscripts and letters to the Department of Manuscripts of our Library. 178
