authority eonsitutes an organized unit as regards acquisition. Consequently, the institutes of the Academy collect the works of special literature supporting current research, whereas the central library procures the fundamental works, reference books of specialized branch of science as well as the material dealing with epistemology and history of science. The Library provides, moreover, for acquiring originál manuscripts needed by research as well as for collecting manuscripts and papers relating to the Academy and augmenting the collection of the Orientál Department and serials published by various academies. The Library, on the one hand supports the institutes to acquire foreign books and periodicals by effecting their orders, on the other, it increases their stocks by distributing duplicates, publications obtained by exchange, presentation copies, material coming from other sources in national ownership. The Microfilm Department of the Library makes material available for scientific woi'k sponsored by the Academy. For that purpose the Department acquires the microfilms of the books, papers, and manuscripts not to be found in the country. 2., International exchange of publications going back to a tradition of more than a century is regarded by the Library as the task of the Academy because that activity is an important factor of international scientific intercourse. The aim of exchange of publications is partly to make Hungárián scientific research known abroad partly to get acquainted with the results of research carried on in all parts of the world. The Library has contacts with 1453 exchange partners, among them 1273 exchange relations have been established according to the aims of the Academy. There are only 180 relations maintained on account of generál library policy. The Library carries out alsó the exchange resulting from international cultural agreements. It provides for sending the complementary copies of the Actas published by the Academy. It organizes, moreover, the exchange of reprints and takes care of the stock of books and periodicals serving as basis for exchange of publications. 3., The basic task of the Circulation Department and the Reference Service is to supply scientific workers with appropi'iate research material. The Library does not aim at organizing a large reading clientele, it watns only to extend the circle of readers dealing with scientific problems and to secure undisturbed research possibilities for them. 88 per cent of users are readers carrying on research sponsored by the Academy. 4., The Bibliography and Information Department supports the Academy in its task of organizing scientific activity and helps individual researchers in their works. The activity of the Department consists partly of compiling bibliographies (e. g. an annual bibliography on The Activity of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences and other bibliographies summing up the activity of its members) partly of giving current information. 5., The bulk of work carried on by the Library in the field of library science deals chiefly with the results of research connected with the Academy and its Library or examines the valucs of certain collections in the Library. The Library intends to develop in the future its services promoting research sponsored by the Academy such as to establish the central catalogue of the stocks owned by the scientific institutes under the Academy's authority and that of the orientál collections in the country, furthermore to start methodological investigation on the role of library network as well as to publish somé catalogues. 14
