The Director-General of UNESCO is especially happy to associate UNESCO with the 150th anniversary of the Library which represents a milestone in the history of international cooperation. Over the past 150 years, the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has, by its regular activities, made a great and practical contribution to understanding between people and to the promotion of high level scientific research programmes, particularly in the fields of Library Science and other specialized branches of knowledge. The precept laid down at the time of' its foundation by Count Joasef Teleki that the Library should be "a public property to be used by all citizens of the country" and a "large scientific library of universal character was a profoundly radical notion". In promoting a world exchange of relations and communications and ensuring creative cooperation between scientific activity and practice, the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences pursues an aim that is closely linked, to one of Unesco's primary objectives: that of furthering the spread of ideas and encouraging the free flow of information. The Director-General of UNESCO attachs the highest importance to the collaboration between the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and UNESCO, which is already very fruitful and I should like on behalf of Mr. Amadou-I'Iahtar M'Bow, Director-General of UNESCO and in my own name, to pay tribute to the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences with sincere wishes for success in the pursuit of its noble enterprise.
