Index of Jewish Art 4. vol: Illuminated Manuscripts of the Kaufmann Collection at the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Különálló lapok tokban.

Introduction

10 The aim of this section of the Index is thus to list systematically all subjects and their iconographie representations in Hebrew manuscripts from the 9th century - the date of the earliest extant evidence - u p to the 16 th century, when illumination declined. The analytical descriptions will deal exclusively with narrative illustrations and with symbolic subjects. Ornaments will only be listed according to formal categories and techniques. Though the Index will only be. comprehensive once all Hebrew manuscripts in public and private collections throughout the world have been analysed, it seemed advisable to publish the Index progressively in order to facilitate the use of the material. Thus the Index will appear in annual issues of small groups of manuscripts in the form of card files. The choice of the manuscripts presented in one issue will depend on technical considerations and will follow the research programme, carried out according to the present location of the manuscripts. The Index is printed on cards and computer print-outs,- it is arranged in two sections : one related to the objects, namely the manuscripts, the other relating to subjects.
