How to use the Index

20 N. B. Because of the progressive method adopted for the publication of the Index, the chronological or logical order in the listing of the refe­rences will not necessarily be observed. Subjects which are found at a later stage of the research will be added to, and not inserted in the extant list. This concession will help to avoid changes in the order of the items. composite subjects, such as : HAGGADAH ; PLAGUES, the ten ; SANCTUARY Implements ; have a collective card with references to the individual subjects com­posing it. see also : refers to other subject cards which mention the main subject. see : refers to the cards where the subject is described under a different entry, e.g. CANTOR, see : HÂZAN The INDEX is a computer print-out listing alphabetically all subjects regis­tered in the REFERENCE cards. Each subject is followed by abbreviated entries composed of : a) the I JA reference number ; b) the card number of the subject in the manuscript ; c) the numbers referring to the entries on the REFERENCE card of the subject.
