How to use the Index
16 Iconographical cards have the bibliographical data at the bottom of the cards and not as a heading. The heading contains the following rubrics : Each card is headed by the subject printed in capitals, e.g. MOSES. Subsidiary subjects are printed in small letters, e.g. MOSES, rod of. The title is sometimes followed by the indication of a special litterary type, e.g. (Haggadah) . Index of Jewish Art ( IJA ) followed by the year of editing and by the serial number of the manuscript in the volume ; the folio where the illustration appears ; the total number of illustrations on the folio, preceded by the serial number of the illustration described, e.g. 2:3. the serial number of the card in the published manuscript starting with the codex card, which bears in addition the total number of cards in the manuscript, e.g. 1:75. When a subject can be interpreted in several ways, there are two or more cards bearing the same number followed by a letter, e.g. 21a, 21b. ICON subject: index N°: fol. : N° illustr. N° of card :
