13 HOW TO USE THE INDEX SECTION I Headings of all four cards of Section I contain the bibliographical data of the manuscript, namely location, shelfmark, the type of manuscript, its provenance, and its date. Conjectural data are given in brackets. CODEX The codicological data are given in the following order : material : vellum, parchment, paper , number of folios : folios belonging to the original manuscript are indicated in Arabic numerals. Lacunae, or repetitions in the extant foliotation are given in brackets, and folios added by the binder are given in Roman characters ; measurement : the size, in millimetres, of the entire folio and that of the script space in brackets ; script : is characterized according to the local variants : Ashkenazi for Germany, North France and England, Sephardi for Spain, Provence and North Africa, Italian for Italy (manuscripts from the north of Italy can be written in Ashkenazi script) , Oriental for Egypt, Syria, Yemen and Persia, and according to formal categories : square round
