Preface This bibliography, pubbshed on the initiative of the East — West Committee of the Hungarian National Commission for UNESCO, contains a selected list of works by Hungarian authors on the Orient. The bibliography embraces a very wide field and covers scholarly works as well as popular scientific publications, textual analyses of scholars, artistic translations of works by classical and contemporary writers and poets, written in Hungarian or a foreign language. At the same time, however, there are considerable limitations: the bibliography begins reviewing its material with the year 1950, and does not, by any means contain every publication issued since that time; instead it gives a selection of works which are considered to be of importance. In selecting the material, special care has been taken to reflect the proportion of work done in each separate field. Thus more reference has been made to fields where more work has been done than to fields where there is still much work to be accomplished. This survey has been made to be of assistance to those who wish to be informed on the present state of our oriental studies, and on works published in the last decade with the aim to familiarize the public with the cultural values of the Orient.
