of Asiatic and African peoples by organizing conferences, exhibitions, lectures etc. We are intentionally emphasizing the importance of science: the foundation of public educational activity is laid by our scholars whose works are appreciated and highly esteemed everywhere. This bibliography is an indication of the fact that our scholars have been eager to participate in making this country acquainted with the present and past of the peoples of Asia and Africa. At the same time, this fact assures the Hungarian public of being supplied with adequate first-hand information on these subjects. That is how we serve the cause of better knowing each other, and the mutual understanding and peace among the peoples of the world. In our epoch the peoples of Asia and Africa play an increasingly important role in forming the history of mankind. Thus it is evident that our country takes a keen interest in the life of the peoples of Asia and Africa. This has resulted in multiplying the number of research personnel and extending the scope of subjects to be investigated. It hase become possible to define the proper place of oriental studies in Hungarian scientific life and also increased the social significance of this branch of scientific work. Oriental studies in Hungary are no longer a curiosity or an auxiliary science, instead it is becoming an integral part of research aiming at the exploration of the history of mankind. * The best works of Hungarian oriental studies, produced over the last thirteen years have been selected out of nearly one thousand items for this bibliography. Besides the scientific and scholarly works, there have been included popular works and also translations from the rich literature of Asia and Africa.
