Goldziher Ignác: Az arabok és az iszlám / The Arabs and Islam. 1. köt. Szerk. Ormos István. (Budapest Oriental Reprints, Ser. A 7.)

Előszó

We would have liked to publish all Hungarian works of Goldziher in reprint, but restrictions on volume forbade us to do so. The present publication consists of a wide selection of Goldziher's works on Arab culture and Islam that were originally written in Hungarian, 2 3 with one important exception, however: we have been compelled to omit Islam which appeared originally as a separate volume. 2 4 In the content list the titles are followed by the item number in Heller's Goldziher-bibliography 2 5 for the convenience of the reader. We are indebted to Kinga Dévényi for putting at our disposal the list of errata in On the History of Grammar among the Arabs which she compiled during the preparation of the English translation of this work. The list has been attached to the end of this paper; numbers in the margin of the work itself refer to the respective items on the list. István Ormos and its supplements know of two Turkish tales which were translated by Goldziher into Hungarian and published in a journal under a title supplied by the editor: Egy tizenhatéves orientalista. In: Hazánk és a külföld 1866, 333-334 [An Orientalist of 16. In: Our Country and the Foreign Lands 1866, 333—334] [No. 2 Heller], but no trace of a Portuguese translation of them could be found. Edward Ullendorf! informs me: „The operative word is 'tease', for Schacht meant to give another unlikely language; he could have mentioned (and sometimes did) Japanese or Navaho! He did not intend 'Portuguese' to be taken seriously." (Letter dated 28th March 1994.) 2 3 Our publication follows the example of Ignaz Goldziher: Gesammelte Schriften, I— VI. Hrsg. v. Joseph DeSomogyi. Hildesheim, 1967-1973 (Collectanea 2/1-6). 2 4 Goldziher Ignác: Az iszlám. Tanulmányok a muhammedán vallás története köréből [Islam. Essays in the History of the Muhammadan Religion], Budapest, 1881 [No. 85 Heller], A new edition of this work appeared in 1980. 2 5 See fn. 15 above. XXVII
