Murders in the lakeside town of Keszthely in the early 20th century - in the light of contemporary press At the beginning of the 20lh century, the newspapers played a more and more important role in everyday life. Being circulated weekly or daily, people could learn about the news of the world, the country or about the joys and disappointments of their local society. The readers got to know in details about Keszthely’s weekdays in the contemporary local newspapers. The real sensations at the beginning of the 20th century were the articles reporting crimes. Two crimes, receiving also national spotlight — murders committed by timber merchant Tivadar Laskay in 1901 and the murder of notary Ernő Lénárd 10 years later - meant excitement and shiver for the readers for weeks and months. In the course of the proceedings of Tivadar Laskay’s case, the motivation of murders was revealed, he felt unrequited passion for a beauty in Keszthely. The murder of Lénárd Ernő was motivated by revenge because of failed attempt of obtaining family inheritance. Both events were shocking and seemed meaningless for the locals, people did not understand how it could happen in their lovely lakeside town. Translated by Veronika Nagy
