346 Bazsika Enikő Abstract On the basis of literary history the study gives an overview of the creation and development of Göcsej area-concept, the two Göcsej-concepts - one is of folk origin with more socio- ethnic nature, existing at the end of the 17th century more limited to the “corners” countryside, the other dating back to the end of 19th century is a broader perception of rather geographical nature and of genteel origin. It describes the studies, descriptions published after 1816, when Göcsej dialect was first mentioned. It also analyses some authors’ resolutions on the territorial division of Göcsej dialect, as well as their findings on the differences between the northern and southern Göcsej dialects. On the basis of available language atlases (Atlas of Hungarian Dialects, Language Atlas of Őrség and Göcsej), publications and monographs about Göcsej dialect (and in connection with it Őrség and Hetés) it gives a detailed picture of the main phonological and morphological peculiarities of the North and South Göcsej dialects and also discusses their lexical features. It broaches the necessity for a multi-dimensional regional language atlas of the geographic area considered Göcsej made with full-density research-point network. It would clarify the geographical conditions of the language and precisely delineate the North and South Göcsej dialectal areas. It deals with the causes and characteristics of contemporary changes in dialect, the phenomena of bilingualism and code-switching. Based on a socio-dialectological research conducted in the region in 2011 it shows the current status of the local dialect of Becsvölgye. Moreover it introduces the speakers’ attitude towards their dialect noting that although the Göcsej dialect phenomena as a whole prevails among language users belonging to the older generation, - there are large individual differences - the young are actively aware of their village dialect and use it in family circles, mainly its ‘neo’ version.
