Kvassay Judit: Árpád-kori településnyomok Nagykanizsa határában (Az M7 autópálya nyomvonalán 2004-ben végzett régészeti kutatások eredményei)
62 Kvassay Judit Arpádian Age settlement-remains in the surroundings of Nagykanizsa (Results of the archaeological survey of 2004 along the motorway M7) Motorway M7 traverses the northern part of Nagykanizsa's territory, about 9 km long East-Westwards. In the Northeast it passes North-Southern ridges of hills, divided by creek-valleys (Bakónaki-patak, Péterfai-árok, Lazsnak-patak). The Northwest part trespasses the wide marshland along the Principáliscanal (called Kanizsa-waters in the Middle Ages). In the Eastern part of the discussed track 5 sites were investigated in 2003 preceding the construction of the motorway. At Nagykanizsa-Bilkei-dűlő and at Nagykanizsa-Palin-Szociális otthon, parts of Arpádian Age villages - known from written documents also - were revealed. At further three sites (Nagykanizsa-Katonatemető-dűlő, Békás-tó and Récsei út menti északidűlő) parts of Arpádian Age settlements were found during the rescue excavations in 2003. The present paper elaborates the material of the latter localities. The outline of the excavated settlement-features and the comprehensive analysis of the finds follow the presentation of the geographical surroundings of the sites and the description of the objects. A single outdoor-oven represented the structures characteristic of Arpádian Age rural settlements at the rescue excavations. Other objects' function is uncertain, but their arrangement in groups with a considerable empty area between the objects suggests surface buildings. The revealed typical ceramics - providing most of the finds - can be dated to the 11 th century. The most outstanding finds were the fragments of bottles with ribbed neck. The first two sites, investigated in the territory of Nagykanizsa, can be identified with the villages Bille and Lasnok, known from written sources. The features at the last three sites, formed of few objects can be defined as the traces of such village-initiatives, populated only by a couple of serfs, that hadn't developed into a village. They might be identified as 'terra Warou' (land Váró), mentioned in written documents in the 13-14 th century. The land merged with the territory of Nagykanizsa and its name perished.
