How can these observations befit into the early military history of the province? Auxiliary troops in western Pannónia without forts T he start of the period determined by finds of dating force is the time when the Romans deployed along the eastern border of Noricum. The legions and the auxiliary troops were arranged until the Danube in a line along the Amber Road, which had been turned into a military road. Legio VIII Augusta was stationed in Poetovio and another legion can be supposed at the crossing place on the Danube in Carnuntum. The chain of camps of auxiliary troops was supposed between the two. We have data about a soldier from an auxiliary troop around Peresznye on the Amber Road who served on ala Pannoniorum. However, there existed several auxiliary troops at that time, the garrison of which could only vaguely or not at all be determined. The tombstones found at Peresznye tell about soldiers whose unit was organised in Dalmatia, and who came to Pannónia during the reign of Tiberius. The name of the corps also indicates that it was set up to serve the new task and the territory 7 from where the soldiers came was a really Romanised territory. We also know about auxiliary troops that research locates in Western Pannónia in this period without the exact indication of the place (Cohors I Hispanorum) . Western Pannónia meant in this period the region of the Amber Road. Another Hispánián cohors (Cohors II Hispanorum scutata Cyreraica equitata) arrived in Pannónia at the very moment when our fort period started. These military 7 units cannot even approximately be located. Their early 7 arrival, however suggests that they 7 were garrisoned in Western Pannónia. Two phases of the military fort It is also worth examining the observation that the fort period of Salla can be divided into two structurally different phases, and the shift between the two can be dated from Claudius' reign. Claudius consolidated the situation in the freshly conquered territories after Augustus' and Tiberius military actions. In the wider environment of our territory, he re-organised Noricum into a province and raised Savaria to colonia rank with the settlement of the veterans of Legio XV Apollinaris.
