Galambos Csilla: Orientalista ihletésű tál restaurálása

Conservation of a Pierced-tracery-style Bowl with an Orientalist Inspiration The pierced-tracery-style bowl was made in the ceramic factory in Tata, in the second half of the 19th century. Its painted motifs we can recognize of Islamic ceramics effects. The bowl was broken in 19 pieces, there have been several attempts of repair in its earlier life. The primary aim of restoration was to restore its original appearance. It was necessary to collect information and material examination. The phase composition of the ceramic was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The microstructure and chemical composition of the glaze were studied electron microprobe equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The ceramic body is stoneware, it was made from calcareous raw material and burned up to 1100°C. On the surface of the ceramic was painted with metal oxides mixed with glaze material after the first firing. Its full surface is covered by transparent, leaded glaze. The thickness of the glaze is 100 pm. To ensure the needed strenght of the adhesive between the rim and the foot of the bowl, it was not possible to set aside the use of dowel joints, for which carbon fiber cord was used with a diameter of 1.5 mm. For the fixing of the fragments, an epoxy-type glue was used with a long setting time. The replacements of the missing parts were made from two component polymer-modified gypsum with the help of a silicone rubber negative mold. The filling of line cracks and the chippings in the glaze was also needed. The retouching was done with acrylic paint, in the case of the base colors with the use of a retouching spray gun, and in the case of the tracery parts with a brush. To imitate the glaze, the replacements were lacquered with two component acrylic polyurethane. 344
