Ceramics and lithics This paper is a continuation of our publication on the Neolithic site Veszprém, Jutási street, unearthed by preventive rescue excavations in 2003. The central stripe of the excavated area is presented here. This is a more or less coherent part of the settlement. Altogether 78 features were found here. They are mainly pole post pits belonging to the house units 6-7 (64 pits) and comprise 14 other, separate features, mainly larger pits. The number of pottery finds investigated is 3128 shards, found in 26 features. Most of them were found in the 14 individual features (93%), only 213 pieces were found in the postholes belonging to House 6-7. The pottery finds presented here can be assigned mainly to the classical period of the Lengyel culture, representing the earliest phase of the Veszprém settlement, i.e., the first half of the Lengyel II period. However, not all of the features presented here belong to this phase. The finds of feature 122 (ditch) and pit nr. 125. can be assigned to a younger habitation horizon within the settlement, showing the development towards the Late Lengyel types. Seemingly House Nr. 6. was the oldest building on the site. The pits of the poles contain hardly any finds indicating that the area was not inhabited in those times. The Houses 7a and 7b seem to be later reconstruction. This early core of the settlement was surrounded by a double fence from the east and the south. There is a row of pits planted in between the houses and the fence (Pits Nr. 263., 195., 198., 446. and 300.). Most of them were large pits of irregular form deepened for obtaining loam for the construction of the houses and can be connected to the building process of House 6. The fence surrounded a large empty space as well that was not built in later on as well. Three of the pits (Nrs. 195., 198., 446.) were obviously used simultaneously as their sedimentation processes seem identical. Pits 195. and 198. even contained refutable pottery pieces. All of these three pits contained layers with ash and abundant animal bones, some of them heavily burnt, indicating that the bones were thrown at least partly in hot ash. The pits contained many shards, most of them painted fine pottery remains. The pits 300., 305. and 292. can be connected to this group though they did not contain fine painted pottery and ash by fact that a larger cooking pot was placed into them. We may suppose that this activity was also connected to the construction of House Nr. 6 as 28
