LOCATING THE CRASHSITE OF A SOVIET ILJUSIN IL-2 M3 STURMOVIK GROUND ATTACK AIRCRAFT IN SZENTKIRALYSZABADJA, DECEMBER 20, 1944 During a ground-scounting I found distorted aluminium pieces and exploded ammunition shells on a plow-land west of Szentkirályszabadja. In 2000 I read Csaba D. Veress’ book titled ‘Battle of Balaton. In chapter ‘Breakthrough the Margit line (December 20-25, 1944)’ I found the following information: on December 20, 1944 during the dogfights of the 101/1 Hungarian Fighter Group Flight Officer Dezső Szentgyorgyi shot down a Soviet IL-2 ground attack aircraft. The Soviet plane exploded upon hitting the ground at Berekto dulo, south-east of Szentkiralyszabadja. Both crew members went down with the aircraft and were killed. Flight Officer Dezső Szentgyorgyi claimed 35 aerial victories by the end of the World War. Among the Hungarian fighters he had the highest score ever. In a later publication of Csaba D. Veress — ‘Centuries of Szentkiralyszabadja’ - one can read the following: .. .a Soviet aircraft crashed south-west of the village in the plot of Mészáros family at Berektoi- dulo on the eastern side of hillcock Posa. After the investigation work I could determine the crash-site of the aircraft at south-west of the village. Meanwhile I found more artifacts which indicated the type as IL-2 M3 ground attack aircraft. The crew was thrown out of the plane when it hit the ground. There is a rumor that one of the airmen was found still alive and a German soldier killed him. We know about the event from the recollection of Corporal Tibor Varjas who was flying as Dezső Szentgyorgyi’s wingman. His memoirs were published by Csaba Becze. Using the documents held by the -CAMO RF - (Centralniij Arhiv Minisztersztva Oboronii Rosszijszkoj Fegyeraciji) Archives Gabor Horvath aviation historian identified the crew with the help of Boris Davidov. The pilot of the crashed IL-2 M3 ground attack aircraft was Lieutenant Lev Nikolaievich Szomolencev, the name of the gunner was Sergeant Nikolai Philipovich Loginov. The research for the crashed IL-2 revealed that on March 23, 1945 in Meggyes-puszta the advancing Russian vanguard executed four German and two Hungarian soldiers in a barn. Military Archeology In May, 1999 an IL-2 M3 Sturmovik aircraft was excavated from the Lake Balaton. This is the most complete aircraft found in Hungary. At the shore of Balaton next to Alsóörs an IL-2 engine was found. The Mikulin AM-38F type engine was excavated in 2003. The Hungarian Military Archeology Association was formed in 2007. This organisation was working on several crash-sites of IL-2 airplanes: at Komlód and Dudar in 2011, at Héreg in 2012. In 2013 as a common project with a Russian Aviation Archeology team wreckages of an IL-2 were excavated at Seregélyes. Among the wrecks the remains of the pilot were also excavated. The identification of the killed pilot was successful. The excavated aircraft parts are in the Aviation Museum in Szolnok. 583
