THE RESEARCH HISTORY OS THE PALEOLITHIC PAINT MINE OF LOVAS The mine of Mackó, on the fields of Lovas, was reopened during the construction of Mainroad 73, connecting Veszprém and the Lake Balaton, in 1951. The required dolomite was gained from this mine. During mining huge bones were found. These were nothing like today’s animals’, this caught the eyes of the workers. These findings were transported to the Bakony Museum, where Gyula Mészáros and László Vértes handled them. There was a debate over the age of the bones, in the end, they stated that these cannot be more than 45 thousand years old, but not younger than 35 thousand years old. By now, we know, thanks to the radiocarbon examination of 1996, that this bone collection is 11 740 years old. This is outstanding in Europe that our ancestors were minig, especially mining red paint, moreover they even made tools for this job. There has been several studies published about this, one of which was written by Vera Gáborné Csánk, who examined the only bay leaf-shaped stone tool. In 1977, another excavation happened in the mine of Mackó, lead by Viola T. Dobosi, but without any result. In 2002 Viola T. Dobos and István Vörös compared the results of the excavation of 1977, the archeological zoology and the results from the research at Vértesszőlős publicated by László Vértes, and finally, they managed to prove that the data in the publication of László Vértes are not relevant any more. 24
