THE PETŐFI SOCIETY OF VESZPRÉM Different associations and clubs played a very important role in the dissemination of culture among some strata of the population during the last century in Hungary. This movement was started by the ideas of the reform era, resulting in the establishment of societies, ,,casino"-s, later the industrial associations, and the different social and cultural clubs to help their members educate themselves. ' The development of this movement can be well studied in Veszprém also. Besides self-education for their members these associations acted as benefit societies safeguarding mutual interests as well. The members usually came from the same social stratum, with similar occupations. In other words they represented the same level of the social hierarchy. Due to their democratic by-laws people of such groups who had generally no say in public life because of their social and political situation could express their views also. This democratic idea though could not be always carried out. Among the Veszprém societies the Petőfi Society, founded during the last decade of the last century, emerged as one of the most significant cultural associations of the city for a long time to come. The membership included mainly the crafts- and tradesmen of the Jerusalem-Hill area of the town, but many intellectuals, leading citizens were enrolled too. Their aim was to enhance bourgeois interests, to further education, and to carry out patriotic and charitable activities. They concentrated on keeping Petőfi' ideas alive, although the members were a far cry from Petőfi's pirit. Nevertheless it is still worth-while to learn about the history of the society even by the very poor available source material, because this examination helps us to get an idea about the activities of all other cultural organizations.
