András Csuthy ICONOGRAPHY AND POSSIBILITIES OF RECONSTRUCTION ABOUT AVAR AGE HORSE HARNESS The paper outlines the best-known iconographical sources which can help us to reconstruct the (Avar and Moravian) horse equipment from the Early Middle Ages. But at the same time, according to the better- known ancient finds, Chinese reliefs, frescoes of the merchant cities of Inner Asia, painted wooden finds, 'Sassanid'silver bowls, various idols, figured textiles and reliefs from the territories of (Sassanid) Iran and Madara is not possible to reconstruct the horse equipment of the Carpathian Basin. The portrayals of horse equipment revealed from the Carpathian Basin from this period are much too stylized (Hajdukovo-Nosa-Peres, Mandelos etc.), or their portrayal of horses are not realistic enough (the 2nd jar of the Treasure of Nagyszentmiklós, the disc of the 15th grave at Staré Mésto), or too fragmentary (Bratislava). According to these in the problem of horse equipment in the Aver period we can take into account only the authentic finds, because the local portrayals of horses and horsemen are not accurate enough to help us. We have much less information about the horse equipment of the Moravian period, because graves with horse equipment were not found. 183
