T. LÁNG, ORSOLYA: Control Excavations in the Territory of the Civil Town of Aquincum: the so-called „Testvérhegy-villa"

the graves lining the main road all date to between the first half of the AD. 3 rd and the first third of the 4 th c. Not including the economically and politically critical time period which occured around AD. 260, these burials reflect the same period of flourishing. Previous research has already demonstrated that Aquincum villas were already inhabited even as late as the AD. 4 th c. 20 This was the time when civilians began to abandon their estates because of unstable political conditions and the villas were taken over by soldiers and their families since they were further from the Danube and were much more defensible (for example the villa of Békásmegyer). This 4 th c.-process is also traceable at the Testvérhegy villa: one of the inhumation graves yielded the remains of a soldier, buried with a Military brooch and Late Roman coins in his purse (including two stmck by Crispus Caesar). 21 In sum, the so-called Testvérhegy villa is beginning to look like a complex constructed at an important junction in the main diagonal road that connected Aquincum to Brigetio The settlement may have gone through several construction phases and changes in the way it functioned. Continuing research in the area as well as the evaulation of the find material will hopefully bring us closer to being able to reconstruct this villa-estate in the municipal territory of the Aquincum Civil Town.
