evidence. The Orci cemetery which, on the basis of excavated finds, could be dated to the Roman period, has also been destroyed. Paralelly with our work we also registered prehistoric mounds (near Balatonszabadi, Zala, Lengyeltóti). Beside the surveys we intended to give a scrutiny to the immediate surroundings of the cemeteries, searching up the settlements belonging to the cemeteries. Mapping up the cemeteries can give some help to clarify the question of the Roman road system in county Somogy. To our point of view the Sopianae-Volgum diagonal road, according to the barrows, should be searched on the track of the present Balatonboglár-Kaposvár highway, here are the cemeteries of Edde, Somogyjád, Juta. The Roman road did not touch Kaposvár, but it went round it in north-west direction towards the Somogyaszaló and Orci cemeteries and may have crossed the river Kapos near Mosdós. It is noteworthy that south of the Kapos valley we cannot find barrows, there are Roman finds in the Drava valley, in the area of Segesd and Beleg (that is where the Böhönye cemetery is situated), so we can think of a smaller north-south road. At Somogyaszaló cemetery we have started a prober excavation which, according to our plans we wish to extend to other surveyed cemeteries, too. The things mentioned above, of course, only mean a starting point, but we hope that our research have made some contribution to the investigation of the so scarcely known Roman period of county Somogy.
