Accessions this year: 1 stuffed sparrow hawk, 1 elephant hide, 1 formalin preparation depicting the development of a chick, 1 noble pen shell' (ANON. 1928). In 1935, the contents included '181 stuffed animals, 67 specimens in liquid, 23 skeletons, 180 dry preparations (ANON. 1935). The contents had hardly changed four years later (Anon. 1939). A new phase of research into the natural history of the West Hungarian border region began in 1976, when the Natural History Department of the Savaria Museum initiated a research programme entitled the Natural History of Praenoricum. 143 The outline had been formulated in 1975 by ERNŐ HORVÁTH, who headed the department at that time. Up to 1981, there were 43 researchers involved in the programme and the number increased thereafter. 144 The programme ended on the death of ERNŐ HORVÁTH. Its findings were published in three reports. 145 In 1993, the Natural History Department of the Savaria Museum was invited by the Directorate of the FertőHanság National Park to do research (entitled the Natural History of the Őrség) 146 into the flora and fauna of the Figure 2.31.
