210 Phylum Vertebrata ern diver (G. adamsi —NAGY 1916), 91 and additional distribution records of species known earlier (BANKOVICS 1990; CSÖRGEY 1902; FARAGÓ and STERBETZ 1985; MöDLiNGER 1979; NÁDASSY 1915; NIETHAMMER 1943; PELLINGER 1991b and 1992a; SZEMÉRE 1910 and 1924a; Szijj 1951a, 1951b, 1955a, 1955b, 1957a and 1957b; VASVÁRI 1922, 1942a and 1942b; VERTSE 1939; WALCHER 1930). In 1992, the Nomenclature Committee of the Hungarian Ornithological Society published its position on occurrences in Hungary of rare bird species in 1990, certifying occurrences of the ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), Arctic skua (Stercorarius parasiticus) and scarlet rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus —BANKOVICS 1992). The 1991 report contains no occurrence data from Western Hungary (BANKOVICS 1993), but in 1992, West Hungarian border region records were certified for the ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), dark-bellied subspecies of the Brent goose (Branta bernicla bernicla), greater sand plover (Charadrius leschenaultii), little tern (Sterna albifrons), citrine wagtail (Motacilla citreola), subspecies of bluethroat with a rusty throat patch (Luscinia svecica svecica) and bar-headed goose (Anser indicus —WALICZKY 1993). The 1993 report certified from Fertőújlak (Mekszikópuszta) records of the spotted eagle (Aquila clanga), 92 bartailed godwit (Limosa lapponica), Arctic skua (Stercorarius parasiticus), Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea), little tern (Sterna albifrons) and gull-billed tern (Gelochelidon nilocita), as well as the Slavonian grebe (Podiceps auritus) and pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum) from Fertőrákos (MAGYAR and HADARICS 1995). The 1994 report mentions and West Hungarian border region observations of the following species as certified by the committee: the ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), the bar-tailed godwit (Limosa lapponica), a skua (Stercorarius sp.) and the gull-billed tern (Gelochelidon nilocita) from Fertőújlak (Mekszikópuszta) and the Slavonian grebe (Podiceps auritus) and pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum) from Sopron (MAGYAR 1995). The 1995 report certifies observations of the following species in the West Hungarian border region: the white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus), Brent goose (Branta bernicla), ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), Terek sandpiper (Xenus cinereus), Sandwich tern (Sterna sandvicensis) and Arctic tern (S. paradisaea) from Fertőújlak (Nyéki-szállás), the bar-tailed godwit (Limosa lapponica) from Fertőújlak (habitatreconstruction site), the paddyfield warbler (Acrocephalus agricola) from the Hanság (Fehértó), and the Siberian subspecies of chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita tristis) from Sopron (Nemes-kút—MAGYAR 1997). The 1996 report certified from the West Hungarian border region observations of the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), 93 knot (Calidris canutus), pectoral sandpiper (C. melanotos), bar-tailed godwit 91 The species is absent from the Hungarian register (HARASZTHY 1998; MAGYAR et al. 1998), as observations so far have been uncertain and inadequately documented. However, its occurrence is not ruled out, as examples stray as far as Austria and Italy. 92 According to SALAMON JÁNOS PETÉNYI the spotted eagle (Aquila clangá) 'is shot in Upper Hungary and the Lake Fertő district'. Quoted by FRIVALDSZKY (1865). 93 The bird was seen at Fertôboz in 1994 but not certified on that occasion (see MAGYAR 1995). The observation was then reassessed in the light of an additional description.
