166 Phylum Vertebrata tory. Several later publications have appeared about the species (HANKÓ 1923a, 1923b and 1965; WIESINGER 1956; VÁSÁRHELYI 1958). According to earlier literary records and present-day collecting work, European mudminnow are found in the West Hungarian border region in the Lajta, Fertő, the Hanság (according to early literary data), Hanságliget, the Rábca (BOTTA et al. 1980) and Lake Fehér (KERESZTESSY 1995a). The latest studies in the Hanság revealed only one place of occurrence (in the Ottómajor Canal at Lébény) (SEVCSIK et al. 2002). In neighbouring Austria, European mudminnow are known in Fertő and in the Vienna basin (WANZENBÖCK and SPINDLER 1995). In 1995, the Natural History Museum in Vienna held an international conference on European mudminnow, aimed at summarizing knowledge of the species and coordinating future researches. 18 Figure 14.1.
