Vig Károly: Zoological Research in Western Hungary. A history (Szombathely, 2003)

Phylum Arthropode! 9 7 swarms appeared in the Szombathely and Sárvár district in the spring of 1947 (KADOCSA 1947) and it has caused damage in other years since then when conditions were favourable for it to breed. Researchers have so far found 46 orthopteroid species in the Őrség (NAGY and SZÖVÉNYI 1997) 16 . This was the first record of the hill grasshopper Odontopodisma schmidti in Hungary and marks the northern edge of its range. The Alpine miramelle (Miramella alpina) had been known in Hungary only in the Kőszeg Hills. Isophya brevipennis, a typical montane species native to the Carpathians, was found at an unusually low altitude. Several other species found in the Őrség and Vendvidék, such as the bush crickets Leptophyes bosci, Pholidoptera aptera and Tettigonia cantons, can also be said to occur normally at much higher altitudes. The Orthoptera collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum includes specimens caught in the West Hungarian border region (RÁcz 1992). PETER A. Us has published records from neighbouring Slovenia. 17 Order Psocoptera (psocids) Psocid records from the region are found only in a summary by SÁNDOR PONGRÁCZ (1914), in which he reports the occurrence of Amphigerontia variegata at Kis-Pöse (Gyöngyösfalu). Elipsocus nuptialis, a species new to the Hungarian fauna, was discovered in the Balf Hills near the frontier (Sopron: Ház-hegy, June 3, 1999, GY. SZIRÁKI). 16 The authors include the Mantodea, Blattodea of these found in the Őrség leaves 41 orthopteroids 17 Us, P.A. 1992. Fauna Orthopteroidnih insektov 32, 314 + viii. Ljubjana: Slovenska Akadémia Znanos This is the easternmost known point in its range (SZIRÁKI 2000). Two species were found during research into the invertebrate fauna of bird's nests (LEINHARD 1986). Mainly through surveys done in the last ten years, a total of 28 Psocoptera species are known from the Fertő-Hariság National Park (SZIRÁKI 2002b). Two are of special note: Elipsocus nuptialis, already mentioned, and Amphigerontia intermedia. The latter had hitherto been reported from only one locality in Hungary, almost 90 years earlier (PONGRÁCZ 1914). Order Phthiraptera (lice) The first collections in the territory of today's Fertő-Hanság National Park were made by LÁSZLÓ SOLYMOSSY, of bird lice from a spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) specimen. Bird lice were later collected by LÁSZLÓ KÁRPÁTI, SÁNDOR FARAGÓ, LÁSZLÓ SOLYMOSSY, TIBOR HADARICS, ATTILA PELLINGER, TIBOR FÜLÖP and JÓZSEF RÉKÁSI, mainly while ringing birds. The ongoing collections have yielded 29 species (including 7 subspecies), of which 11 species proved to be new to the Hungarian fauna: Actornithophilus umbrinus, Austromenopon lutescens, A. spenceri, Menacanthus orioli, Trinoton nyrocae, Anaticola rubromaculatus (RÉKÁSI 1998), Anatoecus dentatus fuligulae, A. icterodes mollissimae, Lunaceps holophaeus timmermanni, Quadraceps connexus and Saemundssonia tringae lobatus (RÉKÁSI 2002). and Dermaptera taxa.
