Vig Károly: Zoological Research in Western Hungary. A history (Szombathely, 2003)

82 Phylum Arthropoda The spiders collected under the Natural History of the Őrség 5 programme were also processed by CSABA SZINETÁR (1995b). Some 2420 specimens collected during the fieldwork were found to belong to 82 species. Diaea pictilis was new to the Hungarian fauna, although it has since been found elsewhere (see, for instance, SZINETÁR 2000). Rare species discovered included Bathyphantes similis, Dipoena prona, Phaeocedus braccatus and Philaeus chrysops. It was interesting to find species expressly inclined towards a warm, dry habitat (Phaeocedus braccatus and Philaeus chrysops), as evidence of the habitat variety in the district. Hungarian distribution records for species in the genus Clubiona were published by KIRILL G. MIKHAILOV and CSABA SZINETÁR (1997). Seven species are known from the West Hungarian border region, most of them from the collections made in the Kőszeg Hills in 1936-7. Subphylum Crustacea (crustaceans) No summary accounts of crustacean species quoting records from the West Hungarian border region have yet appeared. Most communications refer to the fauna of Fertő. JÁNOS VÁNGEL, intent on exploring the microscopic fauna of Fertő, made collections in 1892, which were processed by JENŐ DADAY (1897). They yielded 10 copepods (Copepoda), 25 water fleas (Cladocera) and 10 ostracods (Ostracoda). Sporadic data from Fertő can also be found in earlier work by DADAY (1890, 1891 and 1894a). This makes it surprising to find only two records from Fertő in Fauna Regni Hungáriáé (DADAY 1896c). 6 The presence of the Danube crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) in Fertő was published by LAJOS VARGA and FERENC MIKA (1937a), who were quoted by ENDRE DUDICH (1941b). The occurrence was confirmed by PAUL SCHUBERT (1957). Data on the 'lower crustaceans (Entomostraca)' on the eastern shore of Fertő were contributed by OTTO PESTA (1937). SÁNDOR ANDRIKOVICS and colleagues reported in a communication (ANDRIKOVICS et al. 1982) the occurrence of the gammarid Stygobromus ambuláns in the lake. This has a typical Pontian distribution, the western boundary of its occurrence along the Danube being Fertő, the upper Rába and the Burgenland stretch of the Strém (Strem) Brook (NESEMANN et al. 1995). The same article contains several occurrence records for 'upper crustaceans (Malacostraca)' in Western Hungary. The crustacean assemblage associated with the greater bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris) in Lake Fertő was examined by SÁNDOR ANDRIKOVICS and associates (ANDRIKOVICS et al. 1988).
