Vig Károly: A nyugat-magyarországi peremvidék állatvilága kutatásának története (Szombathely, 2000)

History of zoological research of Western Hungary Károly Vig A comprehensive and historical survey of scientific literature relating to the zoological researches of Western Hungary is evaluated. The paper covers all faunistic researches carried out during the last 400 years on the territory situated in the eastern foots of the Alps (Praenoricum). Field works on Sarcomastigophora, Ciliophora, Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, Rotatoria, Acanthocephala, Mollusca, Annelida, Tardigrada, Arthropoda, Tentaculata and Vertebrata are evaluated historically and commented taxonomically, with special reference to rare and endangered taxa. The text is followed by a complete bibliography included more than 1900 references published mostly in historical Western Hungary, an index of authors, taxa and subject. Scientists working in this part of the country influenced the natural sciences not only in a positivistic way, by a long lasting and assiduous field works resulting large data sets and museum collections, but also paradigmatically. IMRE FESTETICS (Kőszeg) contributed to the emergence of genetics publishing in Briinn his early paper on „inbreeding", including his genetic laws of nature" (1819). ISTVÁN CHERNÉL and OTTÓ HERMAN (both from Kőszeg) contributed substantially to the early globalization of the nature protection and environmental issues (1885, 1890). The largely unknown scientific background leaded to the paradigmatic issues is presented. This volume is the first comprehensive and surely lasting survey of the research, publication, field and museum conservation zoology carried out in Western Hungary.
