The Hungarian revolu­tion took the country across a threshold that led to a new period. Even the advances that were suspended again under absolutism were not lost forever. After almost two decades of political struggle, Hungary managed to regain from Vienna its bourgeois, parliamentary system of state, in the Ausgleich of 1867. Since then, its basic institutions have operated, with shorter or longer breaks, right up to the present day, ensuring for Hungarian citizens a say in deter­mining the affairs that affect them.
