Textiltriennále, 2009, Szombathely Cebula Anna THE PAST AND PRESENT OF THE SZOMBATHELY INTERNATIONAL MINIATURE TEXTILE COLLECTION Leaving the large mammoth shows behind, from the last half of the 1960ies cultural policies finally permitted individual branches of art to introduce themselves with their own exhibitions. In 1968 this lead to the „Textile - Picture '68" exhibition held in the Ernst Museum, starting the tradition of the Szombathely textile biennials which has, except tor becoming a triennial from 2000 on, remained unbroken. Between 1970 and 1990 the exhibition was held in the Savaria Museum; from 1990 on, in the Szombathely Arts Gallery. This is also where all the work associated with organisation and collecting, processing and publication is done. The role of Szombathely in the rebirth of textile art is unique, along with the size of the international miniature textile collection gathered from the material of the biennials during the years. The miniature textile collection of the Gallery, along with its documentation and data store - expanded through purchases and gifts - attracts many textile artists. Without being present at the big Szombathely exposition, it is not easy to acquire a presence in this genre. The catalogues of the biennials count as important „handbooks" for the miniature textile collection. 397
