VID, HUNGARY, 1973 FIRST STEPS TO THE EXPERIMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY IN EUROPE, ESPECIALLY IN EASTERN EUROPE Once upon a time, in 1973 an excavation was in Velem St. Vid, at the western border of Hungary, not far from the so called Iron curtain. Every morning soldier came supervising us in the forest, all the inhabitants of the village had a special task, looking around and registration „the interesting events", the foreigners, all the people who visited the excavation. In such surroundings was so unusual dreaming about an archaeological park, showing up the archaeological results for the tourists and othei; visitors. Gábor Bandi, the archaeologist had lot of dreams. All of his dreams said about his favorite subject, the future of his profession, about the archaeology, especially about the prehistory. His main idea was the popular literature, the demonstration of our evidences, which were devastated by us during the excavation. ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARKS IN EUROPE BETWEEN 1964-1974 Nineteen-seventy-two was exactly the period when the idea of Butser Ancient Farm came to P. J. Reynolds' mind in the UK. This is the time, when the 8th anniversary was festinated in Lejre, in Denmark, supervising and directing by Hans Ole Hansen and Jörgen Jorgensen. Bándi's idea was near to Lejre's concept, but we do not think that they know anything about each other. In September of 1998, the author of that article showed the pictures about the archaeological park of Velem to Mr. Reynolds. He said: I am really sorry, that I did not know that person by this time! Archaeological Park in Velem-St. Vid, Hungary, 1980 In the seventies Mr. Gábor Bandi, the archaeologist directed the Savaria Museum as well, and the ethnographists of the museum decided to build up a „skanzen", an open air museum near to Szombathely (Vas county). Instead of archaeology, the ethnography was in fashion inside Hungary by this time. That means the architectural reconstruction based on ethnography was the first step to the open air museums throughout Hungary. Up to now this is the base of the archaeological parks here: namely in Százhalombatta, Gorsium-Tác, Nemesvámos-Balácapuszta, Szarvasgede, Szeged-Ópusztaszer. In 1980 the workers of „skanzen" moved to Velem-St. Vid and few houses were built here by instructions of Mr. Bandi. Life was going on, and today there is no any documentation of this process except ten black and white photos published here, for what I have to say thank to his spouse, Mrs. Éva Bandi. (Figs. 1-10) The authenticity of the one-time reconstructed Velem-St. Vid In that case we have to turn back to the basic questions of the prehistoric archaeology here. For hundred years the Hungarian archaeologists, „the great generation" connected very strongly to German typology as well. Up to 416
