However, the competition effect of the pioneer colonizers exploiting the more favourable tiles may have some bearing on pattern and growth rates of thalli, and the possibility of a chemical suppression of growth by initial over secondary colonizers cannot be discounted (SEAWARD 1982). The genetic implications of these observations require further investigation. The different strategies adopted by the earlier and the later cohorts suggest that L. muralis possesses ecotypic variation of greater complexity than initially reported (SEAWARD 1976). Such plasticity has undoubtedly been the reason for the success of this lichen in rapidly adapting to ameliorating conditions following the implementation of clean air policies.
