15. KÖTET SAVARIA A VAS MEGYEI MÚZEUMOK ÉRTESÍTŐJE 1981. THE EPIPHYTIC LICHEN FLORA OF THE KÁMON BOTANICAL GARDEN IN SZOMBATHELY (W. HUNGARY) T. KISS and M. R. D. SEAWARD The Kámon Botanical Garden, near Szombathely is surrounded by agricultural and industrial establishments which produce pollutants harmful to epiphytic lichens. In 'consequence of this, the majority of the species present in the Garden are toxitolerant : the observed flora, particularly the presence of Lecanora conizaeoides and Scoliciosporum chlorococcum, is indicative of a moderately high level of air pollution. The map of the Garden (Figure 1) indicates the major stands of trees investigated. The lichen vegetation can exist only in the centre of the Garden where old trees and shrubs provide microclimatic conditions, such as upper surfaces of branches, bases and trunks of lakeside Salix alba. A total of 18 lichen species were recorded; Populus tremula was found to support the largest number and conifers the least. Lichen list and short comments 1. Buellia punctata (Hoffm.) Massai. Large areas of the bark are often covered by this species, especially on Populus tremula. 2. Chrysothrix candelaris (L.) Laundon In bark fissures of a single large Fraxinus. 3. Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach. A few thalli, less than 1 cm in length, were found on a single Salix alba. 4. Hpogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl. The morphology of this species varies considerably, some forms evidently resulting from pollution stress. Very small thalli, only a few millimeters in diameter can often be found on trunks and larger branches (particularly Populus tremula, Picea excelsa and Pinus silvestris), when these are examined closely. 5. Lecanora carpinea (L.) Vainio A few, difficult to determine thalli of this species were found on Populus tremula. 6. L. chlarotera Nyl. A few thalli, with poorly developed apothecia, were found on Populus tremula. 7. L. conizaeoides Nyl. ex Crombie This lichen, widespread in Europe, has been overlooked in Hungary. Our researches have shown this species to be present not only in the town but throughout the region; no doubt this species is present throughout most of Hungary. It is able to tolerate sulphur dioxide concentrations of up to 170 ug m~ 3 ; in Szombathely its 41
