PRAENORICA FOLIA HISTORICO-NATURALIA IV 2001 NEW DATA ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE ODONTOSIA CARMELITA ESPER, 1799 IN HUNGARY (LEPIDOPTERA: NOTODONTIDAE) Szabolcs SÁFIÁN 1 New data on the distribution of the Odontosia carmetita Esper, 1799 in Hungary (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) — The author gives new data on the distribution of the Odontosia carmelita Esper, 1799 collected in the territory of the Sopron Landscape Conservation Area (Sopron Mts., NorthwestHungary). This species - belonging to the family Notodontidae - is endangered and protected, was earlier known only from 7 specimens in Hungary. INTRODUCTION This rare notodontid species belongs to the Siberian Faunal Region, with boreocontinental distribution. Its caterpillar feeds on several species of birch {Betula spp.). The only known foodplant in Hungary is Betula pendula Roth. This species has been recorded in most European countries with few records but is most common in Northern Europe, especially the Scandinavian Peninsula and the Baltic countries (Estonia, Lithuania), where unbroken continuous birch stands can be found. It is widespread from the West Siberian Plain to the south Siberian Mountains. The first data in Hungary were from the Upper Northern Hungary (ABAFI-AIGNER, 1905) now belonging to the Slovak Republic. The O. carmelita has been deleted from the Hungarian checklist by Lajos KOVÁCS (KOVÁCS, 1958). Nowadays this species is known from five localities in Hungary with a total of 7 specimens (Zemplén Mts., Aggtelek Karst, Kőszeg Mts., Sopron Mts., Sarkad-Remete (VOJNITS et al, 1991)) (Fig. 1). The Sarkad-Remete (ligth-trap) data (leg.; S. KOVÁCS) is an atypical record from an Oak-Ash-Elm flood plain forest with few birch individuals. Nomenclature used is according to KARSHOLT and RAZOWSKI (1996). 1 H-9400 Sopron, Ady E. út 5., Hungary
