The methodological principles of this auxiliary science of both archaeology and anthropology were established by János Nemeskéri, Alán Kralovánszky and Kinga Ery. The author applies these principles as starting points and alsó makes use of his own research experience as well as that of other colleagues and stresses the necessity for the application of new taxonomy according to the continued or discontinued use of cemeteries. The questions are discussed here on the basis ofthe 10 t h-ll í h century cemetery at Ibrány-Esbó-halom as an example. This cemetery, highly representative írom many viewpoints provides an excellent basis for model investigations. 412
