18 Preface Németh, the spiritus rector of the whole enterprise.3 In connection with the studies of the volume, 28 charters, letters and regestae of documents were published here for the first time. (Regarding the present volume of charters edition these source publications can be considered to be the „original sin” - meaning the start of systematic exploration of written sources considering the family).4 All these research enterprises were favourably met with the initiative of Miklós Beer, the bishop of the Vác Diocese. He supported the edition of a commemorative volume dedicated to Miklós Bátori, the only member of the Bátori family who made ecclesiastical carrier and became the bishop of Vác.5 Researchers of the Ecsed branch of the Bátori family made an advantage from the positive - both academic and public - reception of the studies published in the quarterly. Due to the opportunities offered by the Renaissance Year, the research achieved a new milestone, two years later. On 7th to 9th November 2008, a conference entitled „King Matthias and his supporters from Szabolcs, Szatmár and Bereg Counties” took place in the castle of Nyírbátor. The event was supported through the Renaissance Year Program, by the National Cultural Fund and of the town of Nyírbátor, and it was organised by the Institute of History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Directorate of the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg Museums. The majority of the presentations were published in the first issue of the Szemle of the next year, too. The articles were published, more or less, in chronological order, as it follows: Norbert C. Tóth made a database on the members of the Ecsed branch between 1377 and 1541. Richárd Horváth and Tibor Neumann examined some important stages of the political carrier of István Bátori, the supreme judge of the Royal Court, the governor (voyevode) of Transylvania and one of the most important supporters of King Matthias and King Vladislaus II. Tamás Balázsik summarised the results of the research on the Minorite cloister of Nyírbátor, conducted for decades. Zoltán Simon reviewed the recent research of the St. George church. Further more, we could read István Feld’s notes on the architectural and archaeological research of this church, and finally Norbert C.Tóth’s remarks on the place of the Nyírbátor Stallum.6 In the year of the conference already, a fragment of the account book of palatinus István Bátori, regarding his expenses through the autumn and winter of 1526 was published.7 At the same time we should not forget that the history of the family has not ended at the beginning of the 16th 3Draskóczy István: Nyírbátor és Sopron.
