Helytörténet - Holmár Zoltán: Az 1920. évi nemzetgyűlési választások Nyíregyházán
Az 1920. évi nemzetgyűlési választások Nyíregyházán The 1920 National Assembly elections in Nyíregyháza The defeat of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I brought the destruction of dual monarchy and disintegration of historic Hungary. In Hungary reviving on the ruins of Empire-at the expense of the Entente and within the limits and conditions of the 1920 Treaty of Trianon-from the point of view of formal law it became possible for the population to decide on the country’s political system. Historically, this is what emphasises the significance of the National Assembly elections. The topic is especially important, because in Hungary in 1920 it happened for the first time that secret ballot took place, using universal suffrage including women. In addition, the I920’s elections had to demonstrate their special character, because this event took place in the period before the consolidation of Horthy era. The importance of the elections cannot be underestimated, because compared to the period of dualism between 1867 and 1918, the most important change was that the number of participants in the election significantly increased: 40% of the country’s citizens were entitled to vote.
