BeneJános Nyíregyháza Hussars in the First World War Static battles in 1915-1916 We publish a 1915-1916 detail from the war diary of László Máriássy, lieutenant of the Kassa (Kosice) 5th Hussar Regiment, from November 20th 1915, the day when he recovered from his illness and joined his regiment on June 4th 1916, the day when the Russian counterattack, the Brusilov Offensive started. The regiment spent this period in the Pripyat Marshes, on the territories west of Galuzia. This was the classical period of trench warfare, when the opposing forces built strong positions, digging field fortifications which were able to resist even artillery missiles; made dense entanglements of barbed wire and mine fields in front of trenches. Opposing sides mutually disturbed the enemy opposite them by patrolling the main aim of which was to get prisoners. Lieutenant Máriássy reported about all these in details in his diary. He also specified on the Easter events of the second war year, when opposing sides spent the holy days visiting each other and having friendly chats, hosting each other in peace. Of course, the war continued and in the summer of 1916, during the battles of the great Russian counter attack, the Brusilov Offensive, Máriássy was taken as prisoner by the Russians together with the commander of the 5lh Hussar Regiment.
