During the campaign of 1922 Bethlen made six tours and kept a campaign speech in many places. Their analysis enables us to get a more detailed knowledge on the program of the prime minister and of the Unified Party. We can learn his ideas on the agrarian reform, peasantry, democracy, royal question and on the opposition. In his speech held in Debrecen he represented on the first place the situation formed as a result of the international conference in Geneva, and possibilities of Hungary. He formulated the priorities of Hungarian foreign policy, the steps to be made in the interests of Hungarian minorities. An interesting chapter of the study is the struggle for the peasants’ votes that went on between the racist Endre Bajcsi-Zsilinszky and agrarian socialist Vilmos Mezőfi in Derecske. It becomes clear that open voting re-introduced in the provincial regions made it possible for the administrative authorities to crudely and illegitimately intervene into the elections. Despite of it, out of eight visited constituencies in Hajdú and Bihar Counties, the candidates of the Unified Party won only in four. In three constituencies of Debrecen two Octobrist and one social democrat candidate won. In Berettyóújfalu, where the voting was open, Lajos Szilágyi, an opposition politician won the election. In Hajdúszoboszló the winner was not Béla Dánér, a racist politician supported by the governing party, but a Calvinist priest, the liberal Sámuel Barabás. All these events evidenced that the majority of peasants opposed the anti-Semitism. József Sipos University of Szeged H-6722 Szeged Egyetem utca 1-3. e-mail: dr.siposjo@gmail.com 333
