A nyíregyházi Bessenyei-szobor Venus a helyén maradt és így születhetett meg a „legenda”, mely szerint egy téli éjszakán Bessenyei megsajnálta a hidegben didergő Venust, és átsétált hozzá, hogy ráadhassa a vállán viselt prémet, melyről a hóban hagyott hatalmas lábnyomok tanúskodtak (Margócsy 1989. 46.). The history of fund raising for the sculpture is dealt with in details. The whole story is an outstanding example showing a town civil alliance for common good. It is exemplary how citizens collected the necessary sum in money-boxes situated in public places and through the income of different events. Later, this was repeated for several times in the case of further sculptures. Sponsoring became prestigious due to the list of donators regularly published in the local newspaper Nyírvidék. The sculpture of Venus is closely related to the Bessenyei monument standing in front of it, though only in connection with a “legend”.
