Nesting of 41 species has been documented, the pair numbers showing significant variability among sites. Correlation analysis was applied to identify the parameters influencing the composition of the avifauna - area of the forest fragment, its circumference, shape, tree species composition, tree trunk diameters, distance to the nearest forest fragment, and length of tree-rows within a radius of 800 m have been taken into consideration. Only the area and tree-rows within 800 m showed significant correlation with the species composition. The study has unequivocally demonstrated that in deforested agricultural regions such tree-stands - even if but 1-2 hectare in size - are of considerable importance for the preservation of forest bird species, and their natureprotection value should not be neglected. Key words: forest fragment, bird community, Tiszavasvári, Hungary Translated by dr. Maria Hotynska András Legány e-mail: drleganyandras@citromail.hu 385
