Szathmáry László - Guba Zsuzsanna - Turtóczki József The 8th-9th century population at Nyíregyháza—Manda bokor The skeletal finds examined in the present paper deserve marked attention as we have hardly had any information about the population of the period (9th century) preceding the Age of the Hungarian Conquest (895 A.D.). In our conclusions, on the basis of a detailed comparative analysis of the skulls and limb bones, we laid special emphasis on a series of regional historical and population historical events occurring in the Great Hungarian Plain between the 8th and 13th centuries which effected a significant alteration in the previous anatomical profile of the population. We are inclined to think it is unfounded to speak about a population historical hiatus in the 9th century, which was assumed to have taken place by former investigation. In our opinion, besides the unstable archaeological chronology there are some osteological moments which have made the solution of the problem more difficult. Anthropological finds suggest that, after the establishment of the Christian Hungarian state (1000 A.D.), the population underwent a rapid supraindividual transformation. However, it must have had its roots in the contemporary political intentions and not in the changes of ecological conditions.
