By this time this institution called by the king for the defence of the country, became completely obsolescent. Habsburg Empire threatened by the French troops tried to response with all its strength and once again after 1795 and 1797 used the offer of the volunteering noblemen. The army consisted of poorly trained and equipped soldiers who got completely unused of fighting. Noblemen, in order to keep their privileges, were glad to support Franz I who got into a difficult situation. Fights of year 1809, among them the battle at Győr showed that even Austrian troops hardened by war, but using outmoded techniques, could not compete with the French, not to speak of the small, but enthusiastic army of Hungarian nobles.
