Régészet - János Makkay: The Late Bronze Age hoard of Nadap

The Late Bronze Age hoard of Nadap Fig. 2 A part of the hoard (after MAKKAY-PETRES 1970.) 2. kép A kincs részlete (MAKKAY-PETRES 1970. alapján) further objects from the hoard. During this operation private collectors and traders (called neppers in contemporary Hungarian) appeared at the scene, and were grieved over their arrival with a delay of a few minutes, just in the time I finished the 'buying'. I only mention this circumstance because the second Directrice of the Székesfehérvár Museum, Mrs. Fitz-Petres was annoyed with me because I did not inform her of the discovery. If I did, due to the delay that that would have caused, at least one third of the hoard would not have reached the Museum. After this, during the next days we were able, with the help of the District's Mayor, the late István Gonda, to acquire a few pieces from the local authorities. We visited the houses of the boys, the name of whom was recorded during the buying, and we were able to find some important pieces there, as for example one fibula: No. 269 (Plate XXVII). Finally, we went to the local teacher, a lady who insisted that she did not have a single piece from the hoard. 'Confessing' boys, however, also mentioned pieces acquired by her. I should record here that Mrs. Fitz-Petres wanted to stop this 'investigation' in the house of the teacher. I was determined not to give up, and I was anxious the ensure that the hoard should be placed in the Museum. After a discussion of around half an our (during this time Mrs. Fitz-Petres constantly suggested, even ordered me, to stop the whole process) I suddenly opened doors of her kitchen-cupboard. In one of the boxes, there were complete bronze vessels (i.e. bowls and cups of Nos. 313-324 (Plate XXXII-XXXVI) with the single exception of No. 313 (Plate XXXII) which was kept by S. Szűcs (Fig. 2, MAKKAY-PETRES 1970. the picture, PETRES 1990.), piled neatly up like daily hollow ware. Immediately confiscated. 137
