Régészet - János Makkay: The Miracle Stag in Ancient Greek mythical stories and their Indo-Iranian counterparts

The Miracle Stag The engraved representation of a bronze dish from Kastamonu (Turkey), dating to the Hittite Imperial Period (13 rd Century B.C.) can be considered the prototype of this hunting scene (Fig. 23). The curious representation shows a man with a bow performing a ritual hunt with the help of a domesticated deer (HETHITER 2002. 232-233., Fig. 18. on p. 232. Cat. No. 101., on p. 342-343.). Instead of bridles the scene was represented using a noseband which was characteristic for the Vedic India before Greek influence (FALK 1994. 96-98.). h. Excavations, conducted in the Tuva area in 1961, found a 13 cm long carved horn belt plaque, which shows the representation of a horse in folded position. It dates to the 5 th century Scythian material of the Altai-Sayan mountains, coming from a grave, which was discovered in the village of Sagly, at a place Sagly-Bazhi II, in kurgan 13. The horse wears the schematic representation Fig. 17 17. kép
