Preliminary report on the results of archaeological research on the multi-level fortified settlement of „Chitattia" (near Solotvino/Aknaszlatina, Transcarpathian region, Ukraine) by the Expedition of the Transcarpathian Museum of Local History Josyp Kobal' The present article is a short report on the results of archaeological excavations conducted by the Archaeological Sector of the Department of the Protection of Monuments of the Transcarpathian Museum of Local History. The excavation took place in 1991-1993 at a multi-level fortified settlement situated in the vicinity of the village of Solotvino/Aknaszlatina (district Tiachev, Transcarpathian region) (Fig. 5). A lelőhely kelet felől The preliminary publication of the materials of the expedition is motivated both by the necessity of publishing new information and, even more important, by the great significance of the finds from this region for resolving many prehistoric problems in the mountainous region of Máramaros/Maramures. Our investigations, as we shall see later, made it possible to revise the stabile cultural-chronological position of the settlement within the system of prehistoric finds from the Upper Tisza region. In addition, we were able to identify traces of material culture of the local Late Iron Age population that existed here before the strictly speaking Dacián culture and which was not influenced significantly by La Téne culture. The fortified settlement (gorodishche) of „Chitattia" was discovered in 1953 by a scientific researcher at the Transcarpathian Museum of Local History, P.P. Sova (CARDFILE N92). In 1965, the site was surveyed by S.I. Peniak (CARDFILE N92). A small collection of potteiy gathered by him (fragments of thick-walled Dacián type vessels) are kept in the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Histoiy, in LIzhgorod/LIngvár. Two years later in 1967, the first archaeological investigation at the settlement took place. It was conducted by researchers at the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Moldovian Republic, under the leadership of P.P. Birnea. The results have been recently published by IT. NICULITE (1987.211-213.)- Based on his report, P.P. Birnea excavated several test trenches at the settlement. The defense system of the settlement, the fosse and the earthworks were profiled. Part of the Fig.2 Solotvino, „Chitattia". On the basis of the analysis of the ceramic finds LT. Niculite has placed the Solotvino settlement within the circle of sites of the Geto-Dacian culture and dated it to the 2nd century B.C. - 1st century A.D. (NICULITE 1987.213.).
