†János Nemeskéri–László Szathmáry: An artifically deformed skull from Tiszadob-Ókenéz

An artificially deformed skull from Tiszadob-Okenéz - Summary In 1957 an artificially deformed skull, dating from the 5th century was dug up during a rescue excavation at Tiszadob-Okenéz in Szabolcs-Szatmár county, and it is in the Jósa András Museum now. The excavations were carried out by Dezső Csallány, who identified the traces of two graves with the distance of three meters from each other. The individual with the artificially deformed skull lay with its limbs extended in Grave 1. The grave was orientated southeast-northwest, and its inventory consisted of an ironaxe (CSALLÁNY 1957., 1958., PÁRDUCZ 1963.). As regards the locality of the find it represents a northeastern peripheric point in the dispersion of the findspots of deformated skulls dug up in the Carpathian Basin (Fig.L). The individual with the deformed skull was a man who died at the age between 45 and 65 years, as determined by the methods worked out by NEMESKERIHARSÁNYI-ACSÁDI (1960.) and ACSÁDI-NEMESKÉRI (1970.). His general biological data and the representation of their determination are recorded in Table 1. The results coming from the metrical examinations of the skull by using the measuring methods of MARTIN (1928.) are involved in Table 2. The degree of deformation of the skull is small (hypomakrocephal) according to the value (77.90) of the OETTEKING-GINZBURG-ZIROV deformation index (OETTEKING 1930., GINZBURG-ZIROV 1949.). According to basion - antibasion distance (141 mm) the skull is deformed to a great extent (GINZBURG-ZIROV 1949.). The type of the distortion is fronto-occipitalis and circularis (Fig. 2-4). The traces observed on the skull provided an excellent basis for the reconstruction of the shapes and measures of the implements (bandages and sheets) used during the artificial deformation.
