Eszter Istvánovits: The earliest Sarmatian finds of the Upper Tisza region – 2nd–3rd century burials in Tiszavasvári
The earliest Sarmatian finds of the Upper Tisza region - 2nd - 3rd century burials in Tiszavasvári -SummaryIn 1983-1985 excavation took place in the Southern suburb of Tiszavasvári, on the spot called Jegyzö-tag (Fig.l.). As a result - among other archaeological objects - 8 Sarmatian burials were unearthed (Fig. 2.). On the basis of the finds (fibula, earrings, Roman military belt-plates) this part of a cemetery can be dated to the end of 2nd c.A.D. - beginning of 3rd c.A.D. The earliest Sarmatian graves of the Upper Tisza region are published in this article in the form of a catalog. They can be dated to the period that came after the Marcomannic Wars. Their topographic situation and connection with the finds of their wider environment help us to reconstruct the historical picture of Upper Tisza region. The events of Marcomannic Wars made the Vandal Victovals leave their previous land. Their moves along the borders of Dacia can be well traced. Sarmatians appeared in this region at the same time and their immigration was in close connection with the moves of Germani. Sarmatians and Germanic tribes occupied strategically important points. The border between them became the outer mound of the Csörsz (or Devil) fosse. Sarmatian finds of the end of 2nd с - beginning of 3rd с A.D.form a separate block. The examination of this problem needs more special research. Eszter Istvánovits Jósa András Múzeum NYÍREGYHÁZA, Pf. 57. H-4401 108
