Takács István - Somhegyi Tamás - Bartosiewicz László: Avar-kori lovakról Vörs-Papkert B temető leletei alapján

186 TAKÁCS ISTVÁN-SOMHEGYI TAMAS-BARTOSIEWICZ LASZLO A STUDY OF AVAR PERIOD HORSES ON THE BASIS OF BONES FROM THE CEMETERY OF VÖRS - PAPKERT SUMMARY Horse skeletons found in the equestrian burials of the Avar Period cemetery of Vörs-Papkert offered a good opportunity for reviewing the quantitative traits of horses in Southern Transdanubia during that period. Previously accumulated Osteometrie data were evaluated in terms of regional variability. Of the possible interpretations, the great mobility of horse stocks (both by human population movements, warfare and trading) was pinpointed as a major source of homogeneity observed in bone measurements. In addition, the fact that most known horse skeletons originate from burials of warriors and other high-ranking persons, a certain degree of uniformity may be caused by the fac that these people rode a selected set of animals. Little is known of working horses from the Avar Period. While „breeds" may have existed in terms of hair colour or type of pelage, such differences could not be detected in the bones of horses from several cemeteries in Southern Transdanubia. The immediate environment may also have contributed to the apparent homogeneity of quantitative traits. 1. ábra 2. ábra Kézközépcsont legnagyobb hossz, mm Lábközépcsont legnagyobb hossz, mm 1. ábra: A kézközépcsont legnagyobb hossza és a marmagasság közötti összefüggés dél-dunántúli avar lovakban. 2. ábra: A lábközépcsont legnagyobb hossza és a marmagasság közötti összefüggés dél-dunántúli avar lovakban.
